Zach Wyatt joins ITV's Karen Pirie as DS Phil Parhatka in the new series, bringing sharp intelligence and quiet intensity to the cold case team. Starring alongside Lauren Lyle, Wyatt adds a fresh dynamic to the gripping drama as old secrets resurface.
Now that Karen Pirie is in its second season, how has your character developed since we first met him in Season 1?
In this series, we see a more empathetic side to Phil, one that is lighter. He is also weighing up the value in his life, and we see him with much more to lose.
What were your initial thoughts when you read the Season 2 script, and how did you feel about your character’s arc this time around?
This series has some sharp twists and discoveries, and from our first read-through, it was so great to see that begin to come to life. Phil has an important part in some of those along the way, which is exciting.
Did returning for a second season feel different—more pressure, more excitement, or just a deeper connection to the role and story?
I was so happy to be back creating something we started a few years ago, you know, and to continue familiarly discovering things with our Director, Gareth, who is just brilliant.
Season 2 introduces new cases and complexities. How did you approach the emotional and narrative shifts this season?
It was extraordinary to be back working with so many of the same cast and crew from the first series. We were able to build on that love of series 1, having missed everyone so much, it was terrific.
Fans loved the dynamic between the investigative team in Season 1—how has that chemistry evolved in Season 2, both on and off screen?
We had no pandemic this time round filming, so that was great! We got to spend a lot of time outside altogether. We also have a lovely new addition to the team, DC Isla Stark played by Saskia Ashdown who is fantastic.
Were there any memorable behind-the-scenes moments or challenges from filming Season 2 that stand out for you?
The whole time filming in Scotland, I love it there. Particularly our time in Glasgow!
How do you think Karen Pirie Season 2 raises the stakes or deepens the themes compared to the first series?
It would be more exciting to leave that answer until July 20th on ITV!
With the crime drama genre so crowded right now, what do you think keeps Karen Pirie fresh and compelling, especially in its second season?
The relationship the characters have with this particular case keeps this series exciting, particularly for Karen, who is seen being challenged and stretched throughout its solution. The journey of this series has an intensity to it from the jump that continues to accelerate. I don't want to give too much away.
Karen Pirie returns on ITVX on the 20th July.
