Being a singer, producer and songwriter in Toronto sunsetto talks to us about his new upcoming single 'late to the party', dream collaborations and future projects.
Hi sunsetto! Thanks for talking to ReVamp Magazine. You have your new single “late to the party” coming out at the end of this month. What’s the meaning behind this song?
For me, the song is about spreading your heart too thin for all the different things and people that you care about, the pressure to be great and extraordinary, and the pressure to be a good friend and partner. Trying to be someone to the world all while being the world to someone. It’s about acknowledging it, offering an explanation and apologizing.
Where did you get your inspiration from?
The inspiration for the lyrics came from pressure. The pressure I think every young person feels. There’s deep pressure like the pressure to be great and better than your parents… there’s also a lot of superficial pressure when you’re young, especially in the Summer where I live in Canada. The days are long and warm and you feel motivated. If you’re single, you feel like it’s the perfect time to fall in love. If you’re with someone, it feels like a make or break season for some reason. It feels like there’s so much at stake and that’s what I’ve been going through, along with gaining traction on my music and deciding it’s my full time focus. This song just expresses all of those emotions.
Who would you love to collaborate with?
There’s so many artists that I love and feel like I’d make incredible art with. In the near future, I’d love to collaborate with Johan Lenox on some ideas.
Have you learned anything about yourself over the last two years?
I’ve learned a lot about myself as a songwriter, artist and producer, I’ve also learned so much about myself as a person and where and how these things intertwine. Therapy helps. Putting music out there helps. Traveling and seeing different perspectives of the world also helps.
With your EP coming up at the end of the year, could you tell us a little bit about it?
It’s the first collection of songs by sunsetto. I’ll always be proud of this body of work. It’s surreal knowing that half of this music was made in the bedroom of a kid in Nova Scotia, Canada. And the other half was made in Los Angeles, California… and they’re all cohesive and they’re all written and made from the heart.
Lastly, have you got anything else exciting coming up for the rest of 2022?
I'm going to continue writing and releasing music. I’ve also been rehearsing my live show and I love it. Keep an eye out for shows and new music. It’s gonna be a wild ride!
