Hi Luke. It’s an honour to have you here at ReVamp Magazine. How was your summer?
Summer was very busy shooting season two of Ghosting! It was such an incredible experience to go cross country. I’ve never been on tour but I would assume it to be a similar experience. I got to see so much of Canada I would have otherwise never seen and I am so excited to share those stories on season two next year!
You’re an LGBTQ+ writer, creator, showrunner and actor. How do you keep up with multitasking with all these roles?
My entire life I have been obsessed with stories, whether through music, television or film, it was a way for my mind to escape and create. Having the privilege of turning that into a job is one of the greatest pleasures of my life and I enjoy every second of it. I think when you get into the machine that is television, you need to love it, or you will not survive. I love creating these shows and bringing them to life.
You also created the show EZRA! How did this all come about, and where did you get the idea?
As a queer person, who was born in the 90’s, I never saw anyone like me on television or in movies, in fact, I saw a lot of people making fun of people like me. I love horror and always wished there were gay characters, or queer characters, even a token queer character if it meant a queer character at all. Ezra was born out of wanting to see what I never saw on TV or in film. I sat down, alone in my apartment, and wrote the gay vampire horror comedy pilot that would change my life.
The show went on to become an award-winning show and received many nominations! How does it feel to get all of this after working so hard?
Making a show, especially a low budget show in Canada, is not easy. Being able to have a series I created from scratch become real that would go on to enter festivals, win awards, and become a success story in its own right is insane to me. I find people often discredit queer creators in many ways, or quickly classify anything gay people make as “camp” and move on without giving it the proper flowers it deserves. For Ezra to get recognition means the world to me, and the amount of messages I have received about Ezra, and the characters I created, changed my life. It was my first show and to know it has impacted so many people is truly indescribable.
On top of that, CBC has announced a second season of ‘Ghosting’. Congratulations! How does it feel to be asked to renew another season and get back on set with your fellow cast mates?
Getting to work with CBC is an absolute dream and I could not ask for a better partner on this show. Knowing I got to work with them again on season two was so exciting, and I feel what we have created for this season is going to showcase Canada in a way I know it’s never been seen before. Working with Matthew, and the new cast for the season, has been such a fun ride. I spent my summer being on tour with my friends going to haunted places, and I think that energy translates so perfectly into the show.
Can you tell us what we can expect from Season Two?
We have gone cross country, and that in itself has upped the fear factor to an entire new level. Going from the Yukon to Nova Scotia, we really take Canada for a ride and go to the most iconic hauntings the country has to offer. I am so excited to share these stories and I am so excited to share the cast when the time comes! I think people are going to be shocked and so excited when all is revealed and I cannot wait.
In the meantime, when you’re not working, what do you like to get up to?
I’m very boring. I stay at home and write, or read, or listen to music. All the basic things. I love a flea market, if I could go to one of those everyday I would. I also love going to the movies, so if I’m not home, or at a flea market, you can probably find me there. Right now I am focusing on getting a few more projects up and running and hope to share that soon.
Lastly, where would you like to see yourself in five years?
I could answer this in so many ways but if I’m being honest with myself, in five years I hope to be showrunning a big show on a US network, and creating stories that inspire people to live life as authentically as they can, through the scope of the horror genre, of course. I hope to continue doing what I love, and I hope with each project they get bigger. I have so much I want to learn and I look forward to getting there.
