In the latest addition to the fascinating world of STAR WARS- STAR WARS: SKELETON CREW, Kyriana Kratter embodies the role of KB; a youngling who hailed from At Attin in the early New Republic Era.
KB is showcased to be a reserved yet cunning soul with cybernetic implants attached to her nerves often aiding her in this adventurous journey- her intellectual abilities often augmented by the visors and augs connected to her.
Kyriana Kratter joins ReVamp in this exclusive new interview as she discusses her audition process for the STAR WARS project, working with Jon Watts and Christopher Ford, her creative process behind portraying KB, how she researched for her character, her excitement for Episode 6, her experience attending the premiere for the project, and all things STAR WARS: SKELETON CREW.
Watch our video interview with the STAR WARS star where she discusses significant insights into her phenomenal professional journey.
Beginning this interview, let's talk about your audition process for KB. What was it that made you say yes to this role and how did you decide this project was something you wanted to pursue professionally.
Well, the audition process was really secretive. I didn't even know it was for STAR WARS when I got it but I just knew it was going to be really fun when I first read the script. It was I believe only like a page and a quarter long so it was really short, but I knew that I had to create a character for it because they didn't give me much information on my character.
I knew from the script that she was a bit robotic, but I wasn't sure if she was like full-on robot or if she was maybe sort of a cyborg type or even maybe just completely a real girl. So, I ended up sending in two takes- one more robotic and then one that was just like half-and-half like a cyborg.
That was really fun. And when I got the role, Jon Watts, I had a long talk with him.
I had a list of questions about my character and he gave me all the answers.
He said that you can just create the character on your own. And he gave me the creative freedom to just make the character my own which was really fun. I also heard that he and Chris Ford went back to the script and they revised our characters to fit us which was really cool.
Do you remember your experience meeting your costars and the crew for the first time? As well as how was it like stepping onto the set of Skeleton Crew in those initial days and finally getting to put on those visors for the first time?
Oh, yes. It was really great meeting everybody. I mean, we were all masked up because it was still during COVID, but everyone was so nice.
And I think we just immediately clicked.
We got to see our dressing rooms and we were all crying because we were all next to each other. There were balloons everywhere so we were playing and kicking around the balloons together, like immediately, right after we met.
We also had a movie night. We watched E.T. and Goonies and we played Mario Kart in our school room as we shared snacks. I think it was such an exciting day because I knew that we were going to be really good friends.
And that was some good casting because we immediately became best friends.
With the visor, I mean, that took a long process. The team who made my visor was working on it before I even went on set. And I had a 3D copy of my head. I shaved one side of my head so the visor would fit. Then we had wig fittings too.
I remember looking in the mirror for the first time as everyone saw me with my full costume on. And everyone was just really shocked.
There was this camera guy on set. He said to me that, 'Oh my gosh, when you walked in for the first time, I had only seen you with your costume on. And so I was wondering, who is this brown-haired girl coming on set? Who is this random kid?'
And he didn't even recognize me. That was just a funny little story. (Laughs)
Being a part of such a massive world of STAR WARS, what was the most memorable element that you feel like you took away from your time on this project?
I took away being more confident and speaking up for myself. Because, you know, Jon Watts is very open to new personalities. You can really just be yourself around him and be comfortable.
I've been so used to being a guest star in roles that I didn't even realize that I could joke around and have fun and still be professional at the same time. Everyone was so open to having fun. I believe I learned a lot from that.
And I came out feeling more confident in myself. And also I learned how to speak up for myself. When we were first doing the visor, I hadn't worn it for so long- for multiple hours when we were filming, only when we were trying it on and making it.
So, I remember feeling kind of uncomfortable because it was just a little uncomfortable in my ears. And I didn't want to speak up because I thought I was going to be a pain. I thought we were going to lose precious time because us kids can only work for so long.
But it turned out that I did end up speaking up because I realized that they wanted me to speak up, to feel comfortable and safe. I realize now that I should have spoken up earlier because it would have made things much easier.
Pertaining to your performance, from the first few episodes of the project, I could feel how straightforward and direct KB is. She's very thoughtful and also very reserved.
Like she's definitely a no-nonsense girl and somehow sort of reminds me very much of Princess Leia. I mean I personally would've loved it so much if I could ever get an opportunity to witness an interaction happening between KB and Princess Leia.
But I'm very curious to know if you had the opportunity to pick any STAR WARS project be it a movie or a show, is there any specific project you'd absolutely love for yourself or KB to be a part of and interact with their characters.
Oh, wow. I would love to be a part of 'A New Hope', and maybe also Mandalorian because I really want to and I feel like KB and Mandalorian would be a really cool team as we both have similar robotic sort of traits. And also, I would love to see Grogu and Neil together which will be really cute.
What was your creative process like while playing KB? Was there any acting ritual that helped you get into the mindset of your character?
Well, I started exercising a lot more. I would go running every morning before set and it was my own meditation process- I got my brain moving and it made me feel really good.
I did some like wushu on the side. I did parkour as I wasn't sure what I was going to have to do and what kind of stunts the show would have me do.
I just wanted KB to be this really strong girl and I even made a stance for her. So, she always stands with her legs far apart and her arms are kind of tough and like a cool robot or the Terminator- just something cool.
Then I made a playlist for myself. I listened to classical music most of the time.
I also did research on other robotic characters. I watched all the STAR WARS movies. I looked at C3PO, droid characters, and also creature characters just to see how they interacted with the other characters.
I took inspiration for my own character. And then I looked at Gemma Chan from 'Humans' because she's a little robotic, but still very helpful. I just combined everything and tried to create a character.
I also used a little bit of myself in my character too. And I tried to apply things KB was feeling to my life. I believe we're really similar so it wasn't too difficult.
Do you remember your anticipation period before these episodes launched and now that the first few episodes are already out in the world, how has the reception been like on your performance so far?
Oh, I'm not sure about that because I'm kind of scared to go on social media. I just, you know, what people can be very like, everyone has an opinion. And so I try to stay away.
But when we were filming, everyone was really nice. They always said, 'Good job.' So I really hope I did a good job. I'm just excited to see all the other episodes, especially episode six.
STAR WARS is such a beloved franchise and you probably already witnessed the excitement, love, and anticipation from the fans before the show even launched.
Pertaining to that, you also very recently attended the premiere for Skeleton Crew. So, what was your experience like with that?
Oh my gosh, that was such an exciting day. I remember waking up and being like, 'This is going to be the biggest day of my entire life.'
It's been like two years since I did the audition so I've been waiting a really long time. And it was my first time seeing all the episodes. I know the other kids had seen them, but I really wanted to wait and see them on the big screen.
It was really cool like taking photos with everyone because I got to see all the directors lined up and I'd only seen them for months at a time and separately. So it was tricky on my mind because I was like, 'Wow, everyone is together. This is like the craziest scene I've ever seen.'
So, for the people who have already watched the first two episodes and are keenly waiting for the next ones, what can you tell us in terms of what we can expect from KB's arc in the forthcoming episodes?
I think you can expect KB finding who she is and really speaking up and making her own decisions. Because with KB, she can be very quiet and reserved, like you said, and she's very straightforward. But when it comes to speaking up, she kind of lets Fern take the lead.
Because her parents, they don't expect anything from her since she's different. She's smothered with love and she has no expectations. Her parents have no expectations from her. And so, I think you'll see a lot of KB just making her own decisions and really thinking for herself.
What's next for you, Kyriana? I know besides acting you're also such a wonderful singer so anything else you're currently working on that you'd like to tell us or your fans about? Perhaps any more music covers in the pipeline or any other acting project?
Well, I'm writing a screenplay right now. I really hope that when I'm a little bit older, I can produce my own movie. And I'm getting into cinematography. I have my own DigiCam and I have begged my mom to take out her camcorder. So, I'm getting more into that.
I'm working on an album right now. I might also release some electric guitar covers soon, but we'll see what else is in the future.
