Kate Wild is a singer-songwriter and vocal producer from London who also is the founder and director of 91Vocals.

Wild's voice has been sampled on tracks with big artists such as Bring The Horizon, Cardi B, and Rod Wave. Kate released her first official single 'Everything I Hate About You' back in March 2024. The track signaled the artist stepping into this new era, as shared her story of past toxic relationships and situations. Influenced by the likes of Tate Mcrae, Peach PRC, Tove Lo and Olivia Rodrigo, Kate Wild has carefully crafted her niche of powerful pop that you can’t help but play on repeat.

Wild talks to us about her latest EP, working with names such as Shiftk3y and so much more.

Hi Kate. Thank you for speaking with ReVamp! If you could describe your sound in 3 words, what might they be?

Melodic, electronic, vulnerable.

Growing up, was the music industry always something you wanted to enter or did you have any other dreams?

Always, I’ve never wavered. Back when I was 16 I had to find a work experience placement. I tried my hand at hairdressing as I always loved to experiment with fun hair colours and styles (I never keep it the same for very long). I did that for 2 weeks and that was enough for me to know, music was the only thing for me! I don’t take it for granted that I’m incredibly blessed with this unwavering love and desire to work in music. Some people really struggle to find what sets their heart on fire. Music has always been it for me.

Who inspired you to create music before you evolved as an artist yourself?

Celine Dion: I wanted to sing because of this woman. Christina Aguilera: I wanted to be a Pop star performer because of this woman. Dolly Parton: I wanted to be a songwriter because of this woman. Sheryl Crow and Avril Lavigne: I wanted to tour the world because of these women. Badass women were (and always have been) at the centre of every ‘wow’ moment I had in the early stages of falling in love with music. It’s these women’s careers which paved the way for mine well before I knew who I was as an artist.

Your EP ‘Hopeless Optimist’, has been out since 26th July! I love it! What has been your favourite song from the EP and why?

This is so hard to answer, like choosing between children haha but I think ‘Who You Are’ holds a really special place in my heart. Most of my songs are my personal experience, I don’t always write expecting people will relate to any of it. But when I wrote Who You Are, a song about accepting and loving who you are, fully standing in that power - I sent it to my co-producer and he replied saying it resonated with him for an entirely different reason than I’d expected. It hit me then that maybe this song could help people with their self-confidence. And if it does, then that’s incredibly special to me.

What has the feedback been like on the EP since its release?

It’s been great! A lot of people have told me their stories with dating apps, toxic exes, crazy stuff! I think vulnerability connects people and as someone who wears their heart on their sleeve, I’m all for it. It’s been particularly fun hearing which songs are people’s favourites as it seems to be a complete mix of answers. I’ve also had some REALLY cute videos from friends whose kids have been dancing around to my tunes which always gets me misty.

How is your EP 'Hopeless Optimist' different from any other music that you have released until now?

I’ve never released Pop music before, not like this. My vocal samples have been out there in the world for people to use however they want, and for a long time, the most regular outcome was that they were used in House and EDM songs. Even German rapper Luciano has used my vocals in a few of his songs. From these opportunities, garnered further Dance-related collaborations. I should say, I LOVE House and EDM, I listen to it all the time, especially in the gym! But when I sat down to write for myself as an artist, I was going through a rough time of dating and I felt I had heavier stuff to say than fit a summer House anthem. I also loved so much of the Pop I’d been listening to, Tate McRae, Peach PRC, Dagny, FLETCHER, Mimi Webb, ELIO, even early Lady Gaga - there’s elements of electronic sounds in my music still, but in ‘Hopeless Optimist’ it’s coupled with 80s drums and electric guitars that inherently leans more Pop. I guess I had to scratch the itch of doing something that pleased me at that moment, but I will always free flow between Dance and Pop because I love them both equally.

What was the entire process of recording this EP?

Much like my approach to writing samples, I prefer to work solo, fleshing out beats and top lines (lyrics and melodies) over loops, recording, comping and producing my vocals and then bringing in a collaborator at a later stage to make sense of and finish it with me. In early 2022 I came across a producer called Wolfgang Pander through his YouTube channel dedicated to licensing ‘type beats’. Wolfgang wrote beats in just the style that sparked my creativity. A mutual friend put us in touch and many months of voice notes later we had an EP. To this day we have never met or even seen each other and yet, we had an instant bond and our musical vision was so clearly aligned. I think that’s quite rare to find. To do the final mix and ear candy for the EP I reached out to one of my best friends and old housemate Charlie McClean who just so happens to be a total musical wizard of a producer, mix engineer, multi-instrumentalist, just all of it. She does all of it well! And that’s why she’s Grammy nominated! I love and trust her dearly and there was no one else I would have wanted to see my first EP across the line with. For this I flew to Berlin where Charlie is based and we spent the week bringing it all together.

You have worked with many known names such as ShiftK3y, and Bad Boy Chiller Crew. Anyone else you would like to collaborate with?

Goodness, too many to list! I’ve always really loved DnB, it’s always tickled the same musical senses that rock did for me growing up. It can be high energy and aggressive but it also has a really beautiful softness and meaningfulness in the lyricism. I think artists like Wilkinson and Sub Focus do this incredibly well. I’ve also been listening to Flume a lot again recently, oh and Kygo. In the Pop world, I’d love to have the chance to write with Max Martin, Ryan Tedder or Julia Michaels one day, masters of their craft! Honestly though, ask me this question tomorrow and I could give you 10 more names. The list is long and the ambition is limitless!

What is next for you, Kate?

I’ve just bought my first-ever home so I’m starting to build my dream studio so that I can spend all my time writing more music for the next EP and beyond. As soon as I have enough music I can get back to the stage and see some faces, I’ve missed that buzz!!
