Jensen Clayden won the hearts of millions of people as he graced our screens embodying the persona of "Oliver Spring"; the young and adorable cousin of Joe Locke's Charlie Spring in the latest season of Netflix's Heartstopper.
The talented Clayden recently joined us to talk about his experience on the immensely beloved series, his audition process, meeting Joe Locke as well as the rest of his cast mates for the first time, and much more!
Hi there Jensen. Thank you for joining us on ReVamp! How are you doing?
I am good thank you and thank you for inviting me to ReVamp.
Before delving into your upcoming phenomenal involvement in Heartstopper, I would love to know how did you decide acting was something you wanted to pursue from such a young age?
Well even before I knew what an actor was I used to invent my own characters and act out scenes from plays and shows. When I was about 3 or 4 I used to watch films and think to myself that somebody must be filming it and then I wondered how did it get on the TV and who told the people what to say? I asked a lot of questions because I wanted to know everything about it and then I found out that the people are actors and they are pretending and they have scripts. I thought it was so interesting.
That's when I realised I wanted to be an actor. Then when I was 5 I went to an audition for an agency looking for child actors and I was taken on and they are still my agent now. I love being on-set and in character. I'm also interested in the Producer and the Director's jobs and I would like to do that when I'm older too.
I obviously have to mention your upcoming performance in Netflix's Heartstopper. First of all, huge congratulations on your involvement! Talk to me more about how you got to know about this role and how did the overall audition process go upon for you?
My agent put me forward for the role and then I was asked to audition and I was called back for another audition but I was filming on a comedy that week so I couldn't make the recall. But then my schedule changed and I had a free day on the day of the Heartstopper recall which was the next day and I wanted to go to it so I went to London for the day with my mum and made it to the audition. I loved that audition because they did improvisation and that is my favourite thing to do.
Do you remember your first impressions of Oliver Spring when you were first offered the script or read the books?
When I found out I got the job I read some of the comics and I noticed that I was just like Oliver in real life. He is happy and excitable. I saw that he was a sibling in the books but he was going to have a smaller role in the series as a cousin because it was probably hard to all of a sudden give him a big role when he wasn't there before.
Were you a fan of Alice's work prior to joining the cast or were you introduced to the show and the books after you were offered the role?
I didn't know about Heartstopper before, I learned about it afterwards and I was excited for people to find out that Oliver was going to be in the new series but I knew it was going to be a surprise so I didn't tell anyone about it and I think it was a good surprise.
As a child actor, I'm sure it must be a challenge balancing both your education as well as acting as a profession at the same time.
It's not very challenging because I am at school most of the time and when I am filming something, they sometimes film part of it in the school holidays or there have been times when I have a tutor and they find out what I'm learning about in school and they do the same work. Luckily my school and my teachers are happy for me because they know it's what I love to do and they know that I am good with my learning too and I don't fall behind with my school work.
So, how did you ensure both of these elements were handled together when it came to significant factors like time management?
I think there are rules about the hours that children can film for but it's a good thing that I like learning so if I am filming I choose to take books with me to set and my teacher gives me the work sheets that I would be doing in class and I take them with me. There's actually a lot of free time on-set so I do get the chance to do school work in between scenes with my chaperone and they make it really fun.
What was it like meeting the cast and crew of the project for the first time? Do you remember your first day on set as well as when you met your fellow on-screen cousin Joe Locke?
I do remember my first day and I thought that everyone was so nice and smiley. Everyone is happy there. The cast but also all of the crew as well and I loved filming with Joe and Jenny, they were so nice to me and it felt like I had known them for a long time.
Did you have any funny experiences or memorable moments from working on this project be it onset or off-set?
I remember how nice the roast dinner was. In my scenes it was Christmas day and I got to eat a roast and I forgot about the cameras being there because I got carried away eating. I even ate the carrots and I don't like carrots. If someone asks me what was the best roast dinner you had I will say the Heartstopper roast dinner.
What can you tell us about your role in this forthcoming third season? Is there anything you can reveal to us? Perhaps a favourite scene of yours that you're really looking forward for everyone to watch?
Oliver loves Charlie and Tori and they love him too. I think he makes them happy when they are having a sad time. I loved playing Mario Kart with Joe and Jenny. I feel lucky that I was chosen to bring Oliver out of the books and on to the TV.
Ending Note:- (Thank you so much for joining me on this wonderful interview, Jensen! Wishing you lots of luck on this upcoming project of yours!)
Thank you for having me at Revamp. I loved doing the photo shoot it was great fun
Lastly, I would love to know what's next for you, Jensen? Anything else you're currently working on that you'd like to tell us?
Well I have something coming out in January on BBC. I can't say what it is but it was a really cool role which I filmed in April this year.
Also, if there's any message that you'd like to convey to your fans and supporters currently reading this interview?
Thank you for being so nice about me because I have been shown some really nice messages and everyone has been really nice to me so I want to say thank you.
