I Am Roze
9th August 2024
Interview: Amy Bell
With such an incomparable voice and sonics dripping in soul, it's no surprise I Am Roze is on the rise. Already receiving nods from industry legends like Timbaland and Summer Walker, Roze was also asked to participate in Nitin Sawhney CBE's Identity Album released last year.
I Am Roze chats to us about their new single 'Think For Yourself' and the creation behind it.
Thank you for speaking with ReVamp. Tell our readers a little about you?
You wanna know a little bit about me let me tell you! I am a concoction of laughter and overthinker at all times and by that I mean I like having fun. Sometimes at the expense of myself, but I do love myself let that be known! Sometimes a self deprecating joke is just too funny to not be said out loud.
You were brought up in Louisiana. How did your upbringing impact your music?
I have a really soulful sound due to being around my grandmother and my mother. They listened to a lot of really strong artists like B.B. King, Brandy, Monica, Buckwheat, The Temptations, Aaron Neville, Boyz II Men etc. So a lot of my sound has that southern soul and heartbreak in it as well as a lot of heart wrenching lyrics.
Your numbers have gone crazy! In such a short amount of time, your music has already reached over 20 Million streams!
I try not to get swallowed in numbers because just as quickly as they come they can just as easily go. All things considered I don't feel any extra pressure but it does feel good to know that I'm a recognized for what I do. The younger me is absolutely thriving because my reality is their dream.
Your new single ‘Think For Yourself’ which is currently out has been produced by Eg White, who has also worked with legends like Amy Winehouse, Adele, Sam Smith etc.
Eg White is such an amazing collaborator because he feels like an extension of yourself. I'm not a standard songwriter I write predominantly in my head in silence and he is able to move so quickly that it didn't take us long to put the song together. I love working with people like him because it always feels like I'm working with myself in a sense. I work so often predominantly either by myself or with my manager so having people like Eg around just feels like another limb!
What is the story behind ‘Think For Yourself’ and how did this song come about?
I don't fully recall what I was thinking about that day, but I think I was just really tired of seeing how celebrities weren't using their platforms to make a difference. Not only that, but seeing how Stan culture has evolved and how people who follow certain celebrities are like drones in an army. They don't think about the consequences of their actions they just do. A really good friend of mine was a victim of people trying to dox him. I think all of that culminated into me wanting to make a statement asking if it was possible theoretically or physically to be your own person. To not follow a crowd and have thoughts that originate from yourself, whether they be based off of research or not.
What was the process like with the song? Did you have a lot of creative input in this single?
Eg sat down at the piano and went around on some chords. I really liked the lamenting feeling and I started writing. I think I got through the first verse before I asked him to change the chords. It took maybe 5 to 10 minutes of me just sitting and writing. If I'm honest I didn't fully know what the direction of the song would be until I got to the chorus. After that it didn't take long for everything to come together as one.Eg made sure I was extremely comfortable with everything. This song is very much both of our fingerprints together!
Exciting news that you will be moving to London soon! What made you choose London and has it inspired you to create more music or perhaps a new sound?
I absolutely WILL be moving to the London area!! When I arrived in London for the first time, back in October 2023, I felt a sense of safety and a calm that I've never been able to feel. Particularly because America isn't the safest place for a young black trans person. I recognize that nowhere is perfect, but there's an air for me at least that is clearer. When I'm there compared to back home in Louisiana I don't see me changing my sound yet! But you can definitely tell there's some British influence in my sound instrumentally.
Anything else you're currently working on?
'Think For Yourself' is just the beginning of a larger body of work, another seven track project entitled Social Commentary.
