17th June 2022

Interview & Digital Editor: Pankhuri Bhutani

Splitting her time between London and Liverpool, R&B pop artist DRCY creates music that touches on topics ranging from love, lust, heartbreak and everything in between. Following the release of her debut single ‘’Butterflies’’, DRCY is unveiling her latest single “Small Talk”. Narrating the early stages of a relationship, where your time is spent just getting to know someone and discovering what’s so great about this certain individual, “Small Talk” sparkles with the excitement of new love.

We recently had a chat with DRCY about her music journey!

Hi there DRCY. Thank you for joining us on ReVamp! How has 2022 been for you so far?

Thank you for speaking to me! 2022 so far has been very busy to be honest. I finished my first year of uni while keeping up with my music and songwriting. I love being busy so I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Let’s talk about your new track ‘Small Talk’. Huge congratulations on the project! Kindly walk us through the creative process of the song. Did you face any kind of challenges during the production stage?

Thank you so much! The creative process for Small Talk was great. I was 17 when I wrote it and first put it down in the studio so the voice you hear on the finished track is little 17-year-old me! My dad actually helped me write the chorus and he’s the one that came up with the final name of the song. The production stage was a little rocky at first as I didn’t have much experience in a studio. But my producer Vince Garcia guided me through it and eased me into the production side of music so I enjoyed every second of it.

Talk to us more about how your experience was like creating this track. The track appears to be coming from such a meaningful and powerful inspiration. What sort of mindset were you in when you initially started working on the song?

I won’t lie to you, I’m not the best in social situations. I like to think I come across as confident because I live by the saying: ‘fake it till you make it!’ But honestly if I like a boy and want to chat to him, I’m gonna need a drink or two!! I wrote Small Talk because I want to do exactly what the song says: TALK! After I finished writing the song I started to gain confidence in situations like this because I thought if I can write about it, I must be able to do it.

What sort of message do you want your listeners to take away when it comes to your music in general?

It’s okay to feel what you feel!! In the past I missed out on crazy opportunities because I cared too much about what people thought of me and not enough about what I actually wanted. I would’ve rather made everyone else happy than myself! I’m still like that sometimes but I know now if I want something, I’ve gotta try and get it. I want people to hear my music and dance like no one’s watching, scream like no one’s listening, and do what they want to do BECAUSE NO ONE CARES!!!

Where do you garner your musical influences from? If given an opportunity, who would you like to collaborate with in the future?

I grew up around old soul and R&B music because my Dad loves it. It’s something about the way some notes can literally give me goosebumps. I’ve been into music since I was little and have been singing since I could talk! It’s something I knew I needed in my life but now that there’s a possibility of it being my life, I’ve gotta have it. If I could work with anyone in the industry at the stage my music is in now, it would have to be Mahalia, Kyle Dion or Giveon. I feel like my vibe fits in with theirs as I draw a lot of my R&B inspo from artists like Mahalia and Giveon, and my soul streak from those like Kyle Dion.

Do you have anything in the pipeline for the rest of this year?

The rest of this year is just going to consist of me doing as many live performances as my body will let me! I want to refine my performances so they look and feel effortless. I’ve got gigs lined up towards the end of the year and it’s crazy to be saying this but I’m gonna be at the Jazz Cafe in London on September 18th this year performing my original songs and some covers. So if you’re around you’ve gotta come!

I’m writing new music every week at this rate so there will definitely be some more releases to look out for!! I’d say keep an eye out for the beginning of July this year…

Finally, is there any message you’d like to give to your supporters currently reading this interview?

Honestly?

I never thought in my wildest dreams I would be where I am today! My career has just begun and I already feel like I’m on top of the world. It’s crazy to me how something that literally started in my own head is now being heard by new people every single day. I’m so grateful to be able to do what I do and I’m so excited to see how far we can get together! I LOVE YOU.
