Singer-songwriter Brynn Elliott delivers a powerful emotional punch with her latest track, "On My Own," featured in the poignant final scene of the We Were Liars series finale. Known for her lyrical honesty and soaring vocals, Elliott captures the raw isolation and quiet strength that define the show's closing moments. The song's delicate blend of vulnerability and resilience mirrors the story's heartbreaking twist, leaving a lasting echo long after the credits roll. With this release, Brynn Elliott once again proves her ability to craft songs that don't just accompany a scene - they define it.
“On My Own” plays a powerful role in the finale of We Were Liars—can you tell us what inspired you to write that song originally?
Originally, I wrote this song as a small anthem to myself that it is okay to go your own way in life and not do what you perceive to be expected of you.
How did it feel to hear your song paired with such an emotionally charged moment in the series?
It was a great feeling, and also very surreal. I love when artistic worlds collide.
Did the showrunners of We Were Liars reach out to you directly about using the track, or was it more of a surprise placement?
Yes, I was approached by those working on the show about the song. But you never really know until a show is out if your song ended up making it. There was also an element of surprise!
Many fans have said the lyrics of “On My Own” perfectly capture Cadence’s journey—did you see any parallels between the song and the story when you watched the show?
Yes, there are many parallels; it’s quite remarkable how Cadence’s journey and mine align. It was so much fun to see that come together in the show.

What does “On My Own” mean to you personally, and has that meaning evolved after its inclusion in the series?
For me, this song is a quiet anthem that encourages self-honesty. It is a song about listening to your life, and you see that as Cadence begins to put the pieces of her own life together in the series.
Were you already a fan of We Were Liars or E. Lockhart’s writing before the show’s release?
I had not heard of We Were Liars or E. Lockhart before being approached about my song. However, I received the novel the next day and scanned it, and now I'm a huge fan! The way E. Lockhart weaves so many themes in her writing is incredible.
Can you walk us through the creative process behind “On My Own”—musically and lyrically?
I wrote "On My Own”, funnily enough, on my own. Then I began working on the production of it with my friend Cason Cooley. Cason brought the song to life with his production magic, infusing it with all the sonic emotionality I wanted to be there. He’s a true talent and an all-around wonderful human!
After seeing how powerfully your song resonated in a TV context, are you open to doing more soundtrack work in the future?
Absolutely!
