Amie recently joined us to talk about her audition process for the role, how she prepared for the stunts, the preparation behind the new iconic M3GAN Dance, and what's next for the young star!
Thank you so much for joining me, Amie! I know your schedule is packed so I really appreciate you taking out the time to talk to me.
Beginning this interview, speaking of your phenomenal involvement in M3GAN. Can you walk me through how your initial audition process went for the role as well as your first impressions of your character when you were initially offered the script?
So, on the very first audition, I had no idea that I was going for the role of M3GAN. I thought I was just going for an Extra. It was a very short process that only took a week and it was when I found out that I got the role of M3GAN, I was so happy and so much in shock as well.
What was it like stepping back into the shoes of M3GAN? Now that you've portrayed her in the previous installment, was it easier to embody her character this time around or did you still come across any challenges?
Firstly, it was amazing to be back and to be able to bring back this character. I feel that this time around, she is a lot more sexier, so it was fun to play M3GAN around with that.
It was definitely easier going into the character because the way we built her last time, we kind of went through how she would walk and move, but this time, it was fun to experiment with her a little bit more sass. I think that was cool.
And the movie has some really amazing people affiliated with it. So do you remember your first day on the set of the production as well as your experience meeting your castmates for the first time?
Yes, I remember the very first sound set! We were in the woods. We were filming the forest scene when M3GAN runs on all fours. I met Violet (McGraw) then, and she was lovely. We grew so close on the film. I love her so much! She's amazing. And Allison (Williams) was really sweet too!
What was your creative process like for the role? Was there perhaps ever any acting ritual that helped you immerse yourself into your character's mindset?
On the set, we had a prosthetic mask that went over my face, and one thing that they did on the second film is that they used the movement of my eyes and replaced it since I've got brown eyes, but M3GAN's got blue eyes.
All of the movements where I'm looking to the left, the right, or looking around, they would use my eye movements and put them to M3GAN. So, I definitely felt that the mask helped me get into character a lot.
I would love to know more about the stunts, such as those scenes that involved those sinister, creepy movements, how did that process go? Did you have a movement coach for those sequences?
For M3GAN 2.0, I did a lot of stunt training. Even before the movie started, they got me doing Wing Chun training, Martial Arts training, and kickboxing, and so I was doing a lot of that.
I was also practising Rig Wire work, and that was so much fun! What we had to remember was that M3GAN is a robot, so the way that she would fight is a lot different to how a human would, and we had to keep that in our minds. I enjoyed training as well as doing my stunts so much!
For the more intense stunts, I did have a stunt double- Meg Morrison. She is so amazing and she helped me with my stunts on the set, which was really good.
We have to talk about the iconic M3GAN dance! We saw a glimpse of a new one for the sequel. The first one is still definitely trending as we speak but what was the preparation like for the new one?
Well, the dance in the first movie was never in the script. So one day, Gerard (Johnstone) was watching my dancing. Then he asked me, "Why don't we put this in the movie?" And I was like, "I would love to!"
So, my dance teacher, Kylie Norris, did the choreography for it. And it was so much fun. I'm honoured that I could bring something so special to me and put it into my character. I believe it took us only a day to learn it.
You also just very recently attended the premiere for the movie. How was that experience like getting to showcase what you've been working on to thousands of fans?
It's so amazing because I am so excited that we finally get to share what we've been working so hard on. And I think that it turned out beautifully.
I believe that the fans will really enjoy it, especially because the last one was more thriller. This time, it's more action-packed. I believe that's something that was needed. And I'm very happy about it.
How was the response to the first film in terms of your performance from the fans, and what can the fans expect from your arc in the highly anticipated second instalment?
I had no idea that the movie was going to be as big as it is. I'm so thankful for that. In terms of the sequel, I think that people need to expect a lot more action, a lot more sass from M3GAN. I think she's a lot more sassy this time. And they're in for a thrilling movie.
Lastly, wrapping up our beautiful conversation, I would love to know, what's next for you, Amie? Besides M3GAN, is there anything else you're currently working on that you'd like to tell us or your fans about?
I do have another project coming up, but unfortunately, I'm not allowed to talk about it. Although I'm going to be doing some conventions as well. I enjoy doing them and meeting all of my fans!
