Sarah Reeves

Interview: Jane Smith

As Christmas is around the corner we got to talk to the talented Sarah Reeves about the most wonderful time of the year!

Sarah has just released her brand new Christmas EP, 'More The Merrier'

We chat to Sarah about Christmas time, her new EP and her plans for the new year!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year - no one knows that better than you, right Sarah?! What are you most looking forward to about Christmas this year?

This year I think Christmas is going to feel extra sweet. I’m looking forward to sharing my Christmas music with everyone that we’ve been working on since the summer. I’m also excited to get together with my family and friends.

During the trying times we’re currently living through, so many of us will have to adapt in order to comply with regulations. What’s the one thing we shouldn’t be sacrificing (ie. it’s not Christmas without ____)?

Although this year will be better than last for most people, there still are many regulations still in place. I think we can still have traditions, still cook the meals, still make our homes cozy and warm. FaceTime our loved ones if they aren’t near and continue to be grateful for what we do have in this season of life.

With Christmas, tradition often takes precedence. With that in mind, how did you feel when approaching writing your own, original track to sit alongside such beloved classics?

I had to delicately approach the process of writing my own “classics”. I knew I had to step outside of my typical “pop” melodies and transport my mind to the 40’s asking myself “how would Ella sing this”? I partnered with people who had either a jazz background or an understanding/love for the Christmas classics. It was so fun to do something out of my norm and somehow felt quite natural.

Do you have any plans for Christmas this year? How about in the new year? What can we expect next from you?

I plan on going home to see my family for Christmas. This year has been a busy one, so I’m excited to slow down a bit and relax with family.

For the new year, I’m already working on new music. I’m always at least 6 months ahead planning for the future. So I’ve been in the studio writing for my next album. Hoping to have my first single out in the first quarter of 2022.

Do you ever feel any misgivings about being so open in your lyrics, like in ‘Anxious’? How did it feel to step back from the more emotional tracks towards Christmas music?

Absolutely I sometimes have misgivings when it comes to writing songs like Anxious. Questions like “am I being too honest”, “will people judge me” often ring in my mind. But at the end of the day, the most rewarding thing about making music is that it helps people. It puts to words what so many feel. People are hurting and they need to know they aren’t alone in their battles. If it takes me being vulnerable and showing my imperfections, it’s worth it to help someone else feel understood and seen.

Stepping into Christmas music was definitely a mental transition, but I think my heart needed it even more than I realised.
