Andrew Hayden-Smith is launching a brand new podcast called Back to Byker, celebrating the legacy of the iconic TV show Byker Grove. In a special twist, he's reunited with his former co-stars to talk about the memories of being on the show, with behind-the-scenes memories. It's a heartfelt trip down memory lane, with plenty of laughs along the way.
Next year marks 30 years since you first appeared on Byker Grove – does it feel surreal hitting that milestone, and how do you reflect on those early days now?
I honestly don't know where the time has gone! I was very young when I started on Byker, but I remember it all vividly. I could even tell you my first line! 'It's ok, I've got my room and a telly' FYI! Haha! Thirty years is such a milestone, and I loved my time at Byker- they were formative years for me. I quite literally walked into the building as a young boy and left a man. I owe the show a lot for giving me my first break in the industry. Some jobs followed that probably wouldn't have happened had it not been for Byker, so I'll always be very grateful.
You’ve launched the Back to Byker series on your socials, where you chat with former cast members – what inspired you to start it, and have any of the reunions surprised you in unexpected ways?
When I realised that my 30th Byker anniversary was approaching, I didn't want to just let it pass me by, so I posted about it on Instagram and asked for suggestions on how I could celebrate it. There were some great ideas- someone even suggested I get a Byker tattoo! Loads of people wanted me to get in touch with the rest of the cast, so that's exactly what I did. I'll be sitting down for a 1 to 1 chat with a different Grover each time, and we have some funny stories to share- I think people who loved the show are going to enjoy hearing them. I was a huge fan of the show before I got the part, so I'm keen to speak to cast members who were on the show before me.
You have recently reunited with your CBBC pal Angellica Bell, the chemistry was still there! Did that spark any thoughts about getting back into presenting – maybe even something fresh with her?
I have so much love for Angellica. We used to see each other every day when we presented CBBC together, so we'll always have that connection. Whenever we catch up, it's just like old times. We bounce off each other, and there's a definite chemistry there. It isn't forced- it just works. I'd love for us to present a show together again.
From Byker Grove to Doctor Who and beyond, you’ve built a solid acting career – are there any roles you still dream of playing, or genres you haven’t tackled yet?
I've always had my eye on a detective drama. Maybe some more sci-fi too. Next year is a big one for me- as well as my Byker anniversary, it'll also be 20 years since I played Jake on Doctor Who!
Are you a fan of reality TV, and would you consider having a go yourself?
I'm a sucker for reality TV! I just love telly in general- it fascinates me so you name it, there's a chance I've seen it. I never like to rule anything out. I do find it strange that we haven't seen a Byker Grover in the jungle yet. Maybe one day...
What’s been the most surprising reaction you’ve had to the Back to Byker series – from fans or fellow cast members?
It's been positive! It wasn't until I put a little teaser out on my socials that I was reminded just how loved the show is, even now. People want to know where the cast are and what they're up to.
Looking back, do you think your Byker Grove experience helped shape your style as a presenter on shows like CBBC – and how would you approach it differently today?
I'd already gained some experience with live TV during my time on Byker. We'd go into CBBC to be interviewed about the show, so I already knew what to expect. That probably gave me a bit of a confidence boost, although live TV can be pretty nerve-wracking. I'm very good at keeping a cool exterior, but inside I'm quite nervous! I don't think I'd change anything about my time at CBBC. We were just being ourselves and having a laugh- I think that's why it worked.
With 30 years in the industry, what advice would you give young actors starting today, especially those entering through kids’ TV or teen dramas like you did?
I'd say go for it, but prepare for knockbacks. I very quickly had to grow a thick skin in this industry. It can be tough! But if you want it, you've just gotta keep going and stick at it.
Back to Byker The Podcast premieres on Friday, 6th June.
