Wyn Starks

Interview: Lizzie Cooper

Wyn Starks is here to talk to us about his new single 'Run'. Starks talks to us about dream collaborations, genres he would like to explore and he tells us what he has planned for the rest of 2024.

Hi Wyn, How are you?

I’m doing great here in Nashville working on my next album.

Did you always want to pursue music growing up?

Yes I was very shy as a child to sing in front of people though so I had to overcome that fear.  I finally got up enough guts and did my first solo in church at 13. That’s when it was solidified. And I knew this is what I wanted to do.

Your 2021 album ‘Black Is Gold’ was a great success with single ‘Who I Am’ reaching #14 on The Billboard Charts. What do you hope to achieve with your upcoming album?

Yes, I’m very proud of that body of work. “Black is Golden” and to see the way it resonated with people, especially “Who I Am” was incredible. This album is new chapter for me though.  I feel like it’s more me than anything I’ve done so far so I really hope people feel that. I’m super excited to share it with everyone.

‘Run’ is the first single from the album - What does the single mean to you?

Giants was actually the first single followed by run. Run means a lot to me I wrote that with one of my best friends. Built By Titan who is  also an amazing artist. He thought about his own friends, back home, who are just staying in the same place I thought about my own life and how sometimes I let fear stop me from really pursuing my passions but I’m doing that now and it feels good!

‘Run’ was co-written with Fred Williams and mixed by John Catlin (The Killers, Interpol, Death Cab For Cutie) What did you learn from working with them?

I’ve learned so much from working with Fred he’s one of the hardest working people I know.  His belief in me, this music, and this art, makes me believe more, which is the kind of people you want around you. John is actually one of the best mixers I’ve ever worked with. he’s been amazing to work with. You can really tell he  cares about what he does and everything just sits just the way I want it..

Are there any genres you’d love to explore?

I’m actually playing with a lot of different styles and sounds on this next album. Giants was really fun to write. I feel like that gives you a little bit of an Americana feel as RunIt will be more of that 80s rock that I grew up listening to. You’ll get a little taste of all the music that influenced me in my life on this next album.

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or future, who would it be?

Some of the artists I would love to work with would be Stevie Wonder, Celine Dion, Rema Jasmine Sullivan, Jon Baptiste, and Coldplay, just to name a few.

What are you most looking forward to this year?

I look forward to sharing this music with everyone and touring. I can’t wait to share all the amazing things we’ve got cooking up. I believe 2024 is gonna be one of my best years for music, honestly for me personally it has already been. It’s been so fun writing these songs and I hope it connects and resonates with people like it has done for me.
