Caitlin Flood-Molyneux is an artist based in South Wales. Caitlin mentions that their art became a safe space after coming out. Inspired by the sales of DADA and early pop art, the combination of found imagery alongside abstract painterly forms allows them to develop their own visual language.

We chat to Flood-Molyneux about artists that inspire them, their favourite piece they've created and pushing boundaries to create gorgeous art.

Hey Caitlin. When did you first find the love of art?

As a kid, I was always painting or making art. My mum was the person who taught me how to paint and encouraged me to pursue it as a career, so I went to art college at 16 and the rest is history.

If you had to describe your art in 3 words what would it be?

I would describe it as bright, representative and daring.

Your work is incredible! The colours and collages that you put together are amazing. What inspires you to create art like this?

Thank you so much, I think growing up I was always mixing different mediums and methods together so it's something that stayed with me. Art is about pushing boundaries and trying different things so I embrace that with my own work.

Do you have a favourite piece of art that you created? If so why is that your favourite?

It changes from time to time but I’d have to say my painting “Ambush”, it was first painting of my 2023 series which was made for my solo show in London and then later on was exhibited in Christie’s for Christie’s Lates Pride event. I feel like the painting is a symbol of progression for me and how far my art journey has come. It’s a very important painting to me.

Are there any artists that inspire you? 

I am really inspired by Gillian Ayres, I remember my Mum getting me to watch an art documentary she was in and Ayres’s way of working and her attitude to making art really inspired me. The way Ayres’s uses bright colours and was obsessed with painting, I see the similarities with myself.

Lastly, if you had the opportunity to ReVamp anything in the world what would it be and why? 

I would love to ReVamp the idea that being an artist is unachievable. I come from a working class family and never had any handouts, just the drive to be a creative and the passion not to stop. It doesn’t matter where you come from, or who you are…if you have the passion for something, just do it and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. The world needs more creatives.
