Interview: George Lewis

Northern Ireland talent NADIA speaks to ReVamp to celebrate the release of her latest single, 'Figure it out,' with the core messaging of trusting your intentions and choosing yourself at the end of the day. She also delves into the popularity contest nature of the current music industry and how signing with Sound Ballistics shaped her career.

Hi Nadia, thanks for talking to ReVamp. Lets start off with the obvious, was music something you always wanted to pursue?

Music is definitely in my blood! My mum and dad were singers and musicians and they always helped in any way they could with my career. I was always in auditions as a child, performing in musical theatre and I recorded my first song when I was 9 or 10 years old in my dad's studio. I’ve always felt very grateful for having my parents support. I have been writing songs since as young as I can remember as well, so I always knew it was something I would do.

In your opinion, how has music and the industry changed over the years? What would you change if you could?

I think one concern I have about the music industry is that everything has become about numbers; how many followers you have, how many streams on Spotify or how many YouTube views etc. I feel the emphasis has been taken off of finding and nurturing real talent and is becoming more of a popularity contest. I feel there are a lot of very talented underrated artists out there not getting the attention they deserve.

Who did you grow up listening to?

As my parents were both in music whilst I was growing up, they introduced me to a lot of amazing artists. My mum introduced me to artists such as Aretha Franklin, Macy Gray, Diana Ross and Fleetwood Mac, whilst my dad introduced me to the likes of The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Bowie and Steely Dan. I also adored everything Motown as a teenager. Amy Winehouse was a big influence on me at that age and I admired her beautiful, raw songwriting. A lot of influences, but I definitely think it helped shape me into the artist I am today.

Congratulations on your new single Figure it out,can you tell us more about what inspired this track?

Thank you! My new track, ‘Figure it out’ is all about trusting your intuition within a relationship, choosing yourself, and not settling for any less than you deserve.

If you had unlimited budget, what would be the dream music video for Figure it out?

If I had an unlimited budget for ‘Figure it out’, I’d love a music video with an incredible backdrop, maybe in the desert, with choreography and dancers. It’s what I imagined when I heard the track for the first time.

What were some pivotal moments of your career that got you where you are today.

Signing with my record label Sound Ballistics last year was a real pivotal moment for me and has really progressed my music career. I was at a point where I was thinking about whether to continue with my music career when Ben from Sound Ballistics reached out. I took it as a sign and very meant to be. It’s the best decision I could have ever made and Ben has helped me so much over the last year to grow an audience and I’m very grateful for all his work and support.

To finish off, what is a motto/phrase that always makes you feel inspired?

I’m very into positive affirmations as I feel they’re a great tool for refocusing the mind, staying grateful and aligning with your highest self. Some personal favourites are ‘I hold all of the power to do and be whoever I want’ and ‘I am constantly attracting everything I desire’.
