Interview: Amy Bell

Raised in Muskegon, Michigan and currently living in Kansas City Missouri. Paris Williams is a songwriter and producer who is about to  shock everyone with his amazing sound. We chat to Williams about his latest single 'Rebel Hearts'.

Hi Paris! Desrcibe your sound in three words.

Bittersweet, Creative, Refreshing.

Growing up, was music always part of the plan, or did you have a completely different outlook on life?

Art has always played a central role in my life. My first passion as a kid was Drawing. I wanted to Illustrate Books and Animate Cartoons originally. Music didn’t become my main creative outlet until I was around 12-13 and found Tyler, The Creator & The Cool Kids. That’s when I started to learn how to produce and write lyrics. To this day drawing is still a huge part of my life even though I don’t do it as much as I used to. I still consider myself to be a visual artist.

You have a new single ‘Rebel Heart’, out now, what was the inspiration for that, and what made you want to create this?

Rebel Heart is my latest EP dropped on January 31st of this year. This project was inspired by a lot of the things going on in my life at the time. ‘Wake Up!’ was the 1st song I made for the project due to just feeling frustrated with how my music career was going at the time. I’ve always kinda felt like the underdog and outcast in a way so I literally wanted to wake people up with that song. That whole thought process of just trying to put my best foot forward and show the world what I'm capable of was the inspiration. To break down the title ‘Rebel Heart’ the Rebel part comes from my approach to music. Being rebellious enough to go against the grain and stay true to your vision. The Heart part comes in due to the number of obstacles I’ve already had to overcome in life and music. A lot of people I started making Music with didn’t stick with it. This is a hard thing to navigate especially coming from a small town with no connections to the industry. Most recently I released a single ‘Pack Light’. A modern take on classic 2000s production that I loved growing up. A lot of my favorite Rap songs are from that Era.

When you write your songs, what gets you into the headspace, do you have a routine before writing?

I still produce a lot of my own music so usually, I get the beat to a place I feel comfortable with and try to write as much as I can right away. While the idea is still fresh and while I’m still really exhilarated by it all. I try to lock in on a Hook I love first but it’s not always the case. After that, it could take any number of turns. I may sit with the song for a while and completely rewrite the verses multiple times until it feels right to me.

What is your favourite part of the creative process leading up to the promotion of a single?

I love every part of the process honestly. Even the very stressful parts of it lol. Personally, my least favorite part is probably recording vocals. I’m super particular about the delivery and pronunciation of the lyrics. My favorite part might be the mixing/mastering phase because I can be a little more hands-off and just tell the engineer homies how I’d like things to sound lol. I love the production, writing, cover art, and rollout phase, literally all of it.

What has the reaction been like to ‘Rebel Heart’, and how do you begin to promote it?

The reception has been great so far. I think there’s still a lot of life left in the project and as things continue to grow I think it’s a project people will be able to revisit and enjoy for years to come.

What is next up for you?

Me and the team are working hard to execute on a lot of ideas. I’d say just stay tuned and be along for the journey. Expect New Music, of course, New Videos, and New Experiences.
