We Three

13th August 2023

Interview: Flora Grafton

They say good things come in threes…and We Three are no exception to the rule.

Siblings Joshua, Bethany, and Manny rose to fame following a successful stint on season 13 of America’s Got Talent, and see no sign of slowing down after their latest album release, ‘Love Me’.

The trio draw on their own experiences with grief, mental health, and love to bring a sense of rawness to their sound, while maintaining a relatability to the stars.

Drawing their inspiration from the likes of John Mayer, Michael Jack, and Earth, Wind & Fire, We Three have reinvented 21st century pop into a a myriad of playfulness and pain.

It’s not everyday we see this level of talent in just one person, so to find it in 3 siblings is quite astounding.

Manny, Bethany, and Josh — hello! Welcome to ReVamp. Thank you so much for taking the time to speak to me today — how are you all?

We’re great, thanks! Thanks for having us.

So, you guys have just released your third album, Love Me — congratulations by the way — can you start by walking me through the journey of the album? What did you imagine it to look like initially and how has that transpired into the finished product?

We try not to think ahead too much while making an album because it’s important for to let the music dictate where the project goes. This album came together very quickly though, which was out of the ordinary for us. Some of these songs were just little demo ideas that Manuel wrote over two years ago.

Once we narrowed it down to 20+ songs we flew out our good friend Bill Zimmerman out, and finished up the record in about two weeks.

Where did the inspiration come from for this album? I know your previous work has drawn from your own experiences with grief and love — can people expect to see different experiences and stories conveyed on this album?

We always try to write from personal experiences! And that hasn’t changed on this record. Although there are a few moments where we decided to push the narrative, to briefly tell someone else’s story as well.

This album explores the depth of the phrase “Love Me.” Manuel said “It’s a very intriguing two words to me because depending on the punctuation, it can mean so many different things. And that’s what we tried to convey in each of these songs.”

If you could each describe the new album in one word, what would it be?

We all agreed on the word “intense”.

And, honestly, what is it really like to work with your family — especially on something as intricate and time consuming as producing an entire album?! Is there any sibling tiffs?

Haha, that’s the million dollar question! It’s actually really great to work together. We of course have disagreements and we see things quite differently sometimes but we really do respect each other. And we’re genuinely really good friends. It hasn’t always been like that though. We’ve really had to work hard at striking the balance between being a band and being individuals…such as identifying individual strengths and weaknesses and letting each other operate in those strengths instead of everybody trying to do everything.

So, obviously you three (it sounds ironic saying that to you guys given your name) went on America’s Got Talent and did incredibly well. At what point in your lives did you realise your passion for music and that you’d like to pursue it as a career?

We grew up surrounded by music. From experimenting with different instruments to performing. We found early on that things just worked best when we played together. Our parents were so encouraging in all this. Dad would put together so many opportunities for us to gain experience and have fun. We grew up learning covers and really making those covers our own. Eventually that turned into writing our own music. There was always something in the back of our minds that just knew we’d do something in music one day but we weren’t sure what that would be.

Around 10 years ago when Manuel wrote the song “Fairytale”, a producer friend sat us down and asked if we really wanted to try and pursue this. This was a pivotal conversation for us cause it allowed us to dream big and really propelled us into making this thing career.

And did you all grow up loving the same music or would you say you all had individual muses that you drew from?

We definitely all grew up on the same stuff….what ever mom and dad were listening to. Since Dad was a professional musician at a time, we would listen to and learn a lot of the tunes he’d play at this gigs. Top 40 chart tunes during the 70s and 80s: so like Tower Of Power, Earth, Wind and Fire, Michael Jackson, etc. As we got older our tastes changed and the three of us started enjoying more diverse artist and genres. Like John Mayer, Mumford and Sons, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, and lots of different Cinematic music.

Now, you guys have amassed quite the following with over 1.3 million Tik Tok followers and over 800,000 monthly listeners on Spotify - how did you all deal with the rapid rise to fame after going on the show?
And I have to ask, have any of you had any ‘crazy’ fan experiences?

It was certainly weird at first but all our fans are such incredible people that it really just felt like we got a lot of new friends really quickly! They check on us all the time to make sure we’re doing ok. They send us gifts and encouragement all the time as well…it’s pretty incredible. We often hear from venues we play at that our fans are some of the best they’ve ever seen. We love them!

As far as a crazy fan experience, the first that comes to mind is a “super cool crazy” one where, during a meet and greet, a fan came up and gave us an incredible gift. She made 3 beautiful little music boxes that played our music! She punched out the notes and rhythms on these scrolls so the songs were interchangeable. It was INCREDIBLE.

Now, you guys are also touring Europe later this year and doing a number of shows in the UK, can you give us a teaser of what fans can expect from the shows? Any guests or surprises in store?

We’re pulling out all the stops! We’re doing things on this run that we’ve never done before. Rising the bar on the production, theatricality, creating medleys of our favorite songs and creating an experience that will leave people feeling all the feels. This is turning into our favorite tour yet! And you never know, there may be a special guest or two *wink wink.

Well it sounds like it’s going to a huge success - just like you guys. Is there anything you’d like to add ahead of the album release?

….sorry, we’re a little late on this lol. Only thing to add would be a big thanks to you guys for taking the time to ask great questions. And let our team know if you’ll be coming to a show and we’ll get you some tickets!

Amazing. Well, thank you again for speaking to me and I wish you all the best with the new album! I can’t wait to hear what the world thinks it.
