ReVamp is so excited to welcome rising star of the screen Isobel Jesper Jones to talk all things 'The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself' - the new drama from Netflix that will delight YA and thrill fans alike. Isobel tells us about her character Jessica, and all that goes with playing such a devious role, as well as exciting future projects.

Hi Isobel, thanks so much for talking to ReVamp! Your brand-new show The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself has just been released on Netflix. How would you describe the show and your character, Jessica?

The Bastard Son is a magical and chaotically beautiful fantasy show from the minds of Andy Serkis and Joe Barton. I think what sets it apart from other fantasy shows is its quirkiness and gritty, dark sense of humour. I play Jessica who is the half sister of our hero Nathan. She is a forceful and determined fighter, who has a vendetta against her brother who she blames for the death of their mother.

Jessica isn’t exactly...sisterly to her younger brother, Nathan (Jay Lycurgo).Even though she appears to be on the side of the “good” witches, it must have been so much fun to play someone so bad?

Yes she’s not exactly a caring big sister! It’s been a real privilege for a first job to bring life to such a complex and dark character. We had so much fun on set and the best thing about Joe’s scripts is how much of a journey each character goes on throughout the series. At the beginning when we meet Jessica her relationship with Nathan seems like it could be typical sibling rivalry and bickering, but as the series develops we realise there’s something much more sinister going on with Jessica. There are so many twists and turns in this show and nothing is ever quite what you expect.

We find out in the first episode that Jessica’s individual power is to shape-shift into other people. If you could spend the day as any other person, who would it be – and what would you do as them?

One of the most interesting things about Jessica’s shapeshifting is that as the series goes on you realise she sometimes shape-shifts unconsciously. With Jessica this is always pretty disturbing - as she transforms into people she’s killed or plans on hurting. But I can imagine if my friends were talking about their favourite artists I could turn into them without realising, and that would be cool. I could also transform into all sorts of historical characters and do a one man recreation of Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure (one of my all time favourite films!).

You’re playing a fan-favourite villain currently (and so wonderfully!), so I wonder what sort of role do you think you’d like to take on next? Maybe someone a little more heroic to help balance Jessica out?

Thank you! I would really love to play someone completely different to Jessica next. One of the hardest things about immersing yourself in a character like Jessica is the fact she refuses to show vulnerability and emotion, but instead buries the truth of her feelings deep within her. I’d love to play a character who wears their heart on their sleeve. I’m also a bit of a hopeless romantic so it’d be lovely to play someone closer to myself at some point.

You’re going to be appearing in The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, the prequel to The Hunger Games. It’s such a massive franchise to be entering, what if anything can you tell us about your character?

I couldn’t be more excited about joining a franchise which I’ve loved for so long. I’ve always been a big fan of the books and the films so it’s been so exciting to be welcomed into the Hunger Games universe! I play a fiery redhead called Mayfair Lipp, who is the daughter of the Mayor of District 12. I don’t want to give too much away about what she gets up to... but she makes quite an entrance. If you’re keen to find out more, the film has stayed very faithful to the book - which I loved reading in preparation.
