Interview: Amy Bell

Recently dropping their single 'Detached'. We spoke to Jazmine Flowers about the new hit song.

Thanks so much for talking to us, when did you realize you had an eye for music, and when did you decide to pursue it?

Hey! Well, I’ve never really known life without music, my Mum is a singer and I would always listen to her singing and playing piano and I would join in with harmonies. I was actually named after Jazz FM, it’s what my mum listened to when she was pregnant with me so i’ve had an eye for music since before I was born hahah! Then I really started to pursue music at around 16 or 17 years old. I was doing open mics, events and weddings and slowly starting to write my own songs.

Growing up, who did you listen to and who inspired you?

As a kid, music was always playing, in the car and at home, I got some great influences from both of my parents. My Dad introduced me to Michael Jackson, Santana, Simon and Garfunkel, and my Mum would listen to Scissor Sisters and Ms Lauryn Hill plus she gave me a huge love for reggae, we’d listen to a lot of Bob Marley and Aswad!

You have a new single ‘Detached’ out now, what is the message behind this song?

Yes, my first independent release too! This song of mine is a reminder to anyone who catches feelings easily to try not to get attached too quickly! If anyone, I need to listen to it the most [laughs]. But no, it’s really just a cheeky song diving into all the complexities of a one night stand!

Do you think you became ‘Detached’ from reality when immersing yourself in this song?

Definitely! I think songwriting and creating as a whole is a really immersive thing which can allow you to ‘detach’ from everything.. you zone out of normal life and put yourself into the situation of the song… super therapeutic.

What is your recording/writing process like and does it vary from song to song?

My songwriting process mostly stays the same actually, I keep a few not pages of lyrics on my phone and thousands of voice memo ideas and samples! Then when it comes to getting in the studio, either with a producer or by myself, I’ll get started on a beat, maybe some drums and chords or hook. See what sort of song concept would fit the sounds or what I’m feeling at the time and get started writing the song! I rarely write songs acoustically.. I'm saving that for when I reach a really emotional phase of my life and just need to sit at a piano and cry and sing and cry again.

When people are listening to this, what do you want them to feel?

It’s a really fun tune so when I perform it live, everyone gets a little sexy and looks like they’re really feeling themselves. I hope they remember their last one-night hook up and have a check in with themselves.. did they catch feelings a little too fast? It’s just my little reminder to allow everyone to have some fun without the fear of things getting too serious!

What is next for you?

I’ve had a summer of festivals and chaos so I’m about to lock myself in my room and write for a while. I’m getting used to being independent and learning to take my time with what I create! New music is coming soon and I have a show in London on 26th November at Headrow House supporting LOONY which will be really fun! So gassed, I can’t wait!
