At just 24 years old, singer and songwriter Maryon King is emerging as one of pop’s most exciting new talents. Born in Calarasi, Moldova, raised in Padova, Italy and London, and now based in Los Angeles, Maryon’s musical journey has been anything but linear. Her story is one of grit, determination and exciting natural talent. 

She first fell in love with music at the age of eleven when she saw Madonna performing “Hung Up” on MTV. Her parents encouraged her to follow a more traditional, less-risky path, but Maryon was undeterred. She spent her teen years sneaking out to singing lessons, without her parents' knowledge, and learning to play the guitar. At 18, Maryon acquiesced with her parent's wishes and headed to university in London to study languages but secretly switched her degree to music within a few months.

Thanks so much for talking to ReVamp, has music always been part of your life and who inspired you to create music?

Music has been a part of my life since childhood. My whole family always loved listening to music but I'm the only one who wanted to pursue a career in the industry. Madonna was my bigger inspiration growing up, followed by Michael Jackson, Shakira, Lorde, and Florence and the Machine. 

Where did it all begin, do you remember the first song you ever wrote and recorded? How has your music changed since then?

The first song I ever wrote was a song called “You” and it is also the first song I ever released on Spotify in 2017. I wrote it in Padua, Italy, with my guitar then uploaded the video on Facebook. A producer from Toronto got in touch and produced the whole track in a week. We then decided to release it and it received positive feedback. I have massively evolved since then from songwriting skills to vocal control and timbre. I’ve been really focused on becoming the best version of myself.

You have moved a couple of times, do you think this has impacted your music career? 

Absolutely. I lived in Padua, Italy until I was 17, then I moved to London and that’s where things really started to kick off in my career. I studied commercial music performance at Westminster University for 3 years and was able to network and find my feet in the industry. I moved to Los Angeles this January to expand my network and it has helped me find myself even more. I've been keen to move to LA since I was 15 but I never had the financial means to move until now. 

Your new single is "Boys Will Be Boys." What inspired you to create this song, and did you use past experiences to write this song?

I wrote this song with an all female team which I absolutely love because it hardly ever happens in the industry. The song is about those situationships you get stuck in when you first start dating someone and you get quickly disappointed because the person you're dating doesn't communicate their real intentions. I wanted it to be a fuck boy anthem.

What do you want people to feel while listening to your song? 

I want them to feel empowered and to scream it at the top of their lungs. We have all been through those experiences with someone who didn't deserve us and this song encapsulates that feeling.

What was the writing/recording process like?

We wrote the song in 3 hours because the energy in the room was just electric. It was the fastest song I have ever written! I then posted a snippet on TikTok that went viral and everyone loved it. I then finished cutting vocals, mixed and mastered it, and now it's finally out!

What is next for you? 

I am planning to release a couple of singles in the next few months and then my EP early next year. I have everything ready to go and I am thrilled to be sharing some of my most emotional songs with the world.
