Tally Spear

2nd September 2022

Interview: Amy Bell

Tally Spear dropped her latest single 'Death Anxiety'. Recorded in a bedroom in Peckham, Tally has explained of the track, "The human element of songwriting and music is what matters most to me, and using my voice as boldly as I can. Death Anxiety is about using death as a motivation to live, and using anxiety about failure as motivation to succeed."

We spoke to Tally about the new single and the process of creating the hit track.

Thanks so much for talking to ReVamp, how did you get into music and who inspired you to create music?

I’ve always had a very musical family and the house was always filled with music and singing. My Dad taught me to play on a little Spanish guitar when I was around 10, and I was immediately writing songs and performing them anywhere I could!

Do you remember the first ever song you ever wrote and how has your music style changed over the years?

I do! It was a piano ballad and I performed it when I was around 12 at this a local youth club event! It was called ‘let it out’ and it was about releasing your inner creativity haha.

You have a new single ‘Death Anxiety’, on 1st September, what inspired this single?

The idea of death and ageing has already really scared me; this song is dealing with that fear in a sort of ironic way, ‘death anxiety is killing me’ … but at the same time the song is also meant to be defiant, using death as a motivation to succeed and strive high while we can!

What is your recording/writing process like and what do you enjoy the most?

I love those moments when you’re in a room with someone making a track and the ideas are flowing and you’re both on this high, knowing that you’re making something special. there’s no better feeling than that. I always sing ideas into my voice memos when I’m out walking or driving then expand on them when I’m with my guitar or with someone in the studio.

If you could choose one lyric from the single, what would be your favorite lyric?

‘Death anxiety is killing me’.

When people are listening, what do you want them to feel? What is the message behind ‘Death Anxiety?

I hope people feel introspective and inspired. Go for your wildest dreams while you can and prove everybody wrong who doubted you!
