Interview: Amy Bell

Dropping her brand new EP 'Golden' yesterday. We got to catch up with Goldie Vargas about her favourite track, mental health and future plans.

Thanks so much for talking to ReVamp, can you tell us a bit about your music journey and when did you get into music?

Hi! Thank you so much for having me! I grew up in a family of artists, so I have always been surrounded by different art forms and ways of expressions. My parents are huge music fans, my dad loves classic rock and my mom had tons of instruments in the house that were passed down to her. My earliest memory is being smaller than the piano and trying to touch the keys.

My parents saw my interest in music and playing from a young age so they put me straight into piano lessons once I was able to sit still and concentrate for an hour ahaha. Then around 10 they put me into vocal training after I would sit at the piano for hours making up silly songs while playing. From there the love grew more and like everyone else, I was in a band when I was 14-16. After highschool I wanted to pursue music professionally and shortly after I met my amazing producer Adam Gurr and the rest is history!

How did you know that music was something you wanted to get into and what was the first song you ever recorded?

I loved performing for absolutely everyone when I was a child and that turned into a love for performing music. I knew it was something I wanted to pursue professionally since I was a child but my mom really wanted me to graduate highschool first. She wanted to make sure I was not only old enough, but confident in my own skin and able to take the criticism from the industry.

The first song I ever recorded was a song called “Not Me” and I produced and played on the entire thing! It was so much fun.

How has your music changed since the beginning?

I think my style has changed a lot! I have definitely grown up and with that has come different experiences which I think makes songs more relatable. I also started working with Adam Gurr and he really has helped shape my sound. I am so lucky I started working with him so young because he has been such a positive impact in how I go about writing, recording and creating.

You have a new EP ‘Golden’, can you tell us the journey and behind-the-scenes process for this EP?

'GOLDEN' was written and recorded during the pandemic with my producer, Adam Gurr. While the entire world was basically shut down, Adam and I spent every week recording and working on the EP. It definitely gave us both a purpose for that summer and something to distract us from what was going on with the world. Not only was there a pandemic going on but I was also at the last bit of my teen years growing up, going through romance, heartbreak, and mental health struggles. 'GOLDEN' feels like a short story about that period of my life and who I was.

Have you got a favourite track on it and why?

That is such a difficult question to answer since each song is so incredibly personal to me! It changes a lot. I feel like whatever song I'm currently pushing as a single tends to be my favorite as I'm paying the most attention to it, so right now it's probably "Canyon."

You have been through quite the journey of a pandemic and mental health, what is one piece of advice you would give to your younger self?

Probably to let go. I had such a paralyzing fear of not being successful in something I wanted to do to the point where I physically was stuck and couldn't even accomplish reaching out to a producer or guitarist to work with because I felt like they would say no! I also am very very lucky to have been able to have access to therapy my entire life but I do wish it was something that I started consistently straight out of high school. I feel like if you have access to therapy, everyone should go to it. There is such a stigma behind therapy that you can only go when you are at your lowest or when you are not mentally well, which is so incredibly far from true! To have a professional to be able to talk to about the more heavy things in life and to help you figure out and analyze your own brain is such a powerful tool to have.

What are you most looking forward to in the release of this EP?

To let it go and have everyone be able to hear it! I am so so excited to have it finally be out in the world.
