Shobsy

9th June 2022

Interview: Amy Bell

Shobsy refuses to tread lightly in each of his releases, “Driven” being the latest shot of adrenaline to add to his already eclectic discography. Fans of The Weeknd, Kanye West & Kavinsky are in for a treat as Shobsy embodies each of them through the track’s genre-hopping rhythm, crossing the boundaries of synth pop into R&B.

Dublin powerhouse Shobsy continues building momentum in brand-new release ‘Driven’ – a genre-blending pop phenomenon.

Hotly tipped for his soaring falsetto and knack for fusing together contemporary and classic soundscapes to produce modern takes on 80s pop, Irish act Shobsy refuses to tread lightly in each of his releases, ‘Driven’ being the latest shot of adrenaline to add to his already eclectic discography.

Thanks for talking to ReVamp, can you talk to us about your music journey growing up?

Music has been my closest companion all my life. I don't actually remember a time when it wasnt my main focus. I grew musically as a child through various obsessions starting with U2, followed by Elvis then onto Queen and David Bowie. These artists solidified my desire to pursue music.

You mix contemporary and classic into the modern world, how do you mix these two together?

Recently i've been enjoying a lot of really great modern hip hop artists like Ye and Kendrick Lamar. I thought it would be interesting to mix some production values of this genre with classic 80's production that i also love. 'Driven' was born out of that.

You have a new single ‘Driven’, what was the message behind this single?

Essentially 'Driven' is a song about sexual tension and frustration, that feeling of needing release you think you can only get from this one person.

How is this different from any of the other music that you have released?

I used a voice sample in this song that I created by manipulating my sister's voice saying 'I love you, baby'. My first time using an almost hip hop like voice sample sound.

What is the recording/writing process like for a new single?

I find it extremely insular in a beautiful way, I liken it to prayer or meditation. You get a chance to swim im your own inner world and see what you come back with. It's a beautiful and exciting process.
