Dancing with pop icons like Kylie, Liam Payne and Jessie Ware; we got to talk to Ben Hukin all about dance and working with Halle Bailey for Disney's The Little Mermaid.

What made you become a dancer? What inspired you. 

From as long as I can remember I have been moving and dancing. At all the family parties and school discos I was always the one on the dance floor dancing my socks off. It was when I was around 4 years old my mum put me into dance classes. However, I didn’t know I could make a career from it until I was 14 or 15 when I was looking into dance colleges to attend. My inspiration really stemmed from music. Listening to all different genres of music would elicit different emotions and take me on a little journey which inspired me to move. My friends also inspired me. Seeing some of the amazing achievements they had accomplished truly opened the doors to a whole world of possibilities for me in the dance industry. 

Dancing with big names such as Kylie Minogue, Liam Payne and Jessie Ware. How was this experience for you? 

It has honestly been incredible. I have been so fortunate to work with and share the stage with so many incredible artists. With great artists comes great creatives also, and I’ve been extremely grateful to work closely with many of these. It is a huge blessing to be able to say I love my job and get to do it everyday.

What was your favourite song of there’s to perform too?

Ahhh there is so many. I am a huge fan of so many of Jessie Ware’s songs but I always love performing Step into My life. The song is just incredible and its a duet with me and her which is always fun. Jessie has just been confirmed to support Harry Styles out in Chicago in October too which will be incredible to perform to the crowd in the US.

You’ve had an exciting job last year where you got to dance for the new upcoming live action movie for Disney’s The Little Mermaid starring Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy. As it’s early days you’re probably not allowed to say much but what was it like being on set? 

Being on a movie set is so surreal. In all honesty it reminds me of when I was younger and all your creative imaginations just come to life as you’re essentially bringing this fantasy world to reality. Being apart of the Little Mermaid was definitely that for me.

What advice would you give to upcoming dancers who want to perform?

For those coming up in the dance industry, I would always say be as authentic to yourself as you can but remember the aims of the business. What I mean by this, is that each job require a different energy or character and for you to stay consistent you have to be able to adapt and mould to what is required. I’ve found that this has been able to bring in work I never thought id be able to do nor did I think I would enjoy as much as I did. 

Lastly, any future plans? Anything we need to look out for to watch you dance? 

I am always looking at expanding and growing. I am currently finishing my Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and Psychology which has been a huge achievement for me. As you can probably tell, I love learning and that is exactly what this next chapter is about for me. Continuing to learn and putting myself in new territories.
