15th April 2022

Interview & Digital Editor: Pankhuri Bhutani

Hailing from the UK, now Melbourne-based, DJ and producer TIGS is one of the most experimental exports of UK underground music. Making it his mission to showcase grime and bass music on the worldwide stage, in his time, Tigs has been one of the most experimental exports of UK underground music, trying his hand in the garage, bass, grime, and many other areas of experimental underground dance music, earning him quite the reputation.

Recently releasing his brand new single “Bad Like We” featuring the talented Peppery, TIGS sat down with ReVamp magazine in order to discuss insights into his music journey.

Hi there TIGS. Thanks for joining us on ReVamp! How has the start of this year been for you?

Hi Guys — Yeah it’s been great so far had a couple of releases out there so far and looking to keep that energy for the rest of the year!

You are about to release your new track ‘Bad Like Me’. Huge congratulations! How is this anticipation period going on for you? Feeling nervous or excited?

Always a mixture of both those feelings on the lead up defiantly leaning more toward excitement though — last few releases have been grime so it’s good to be switching up the styles on this release and see how it's received

Kindly walk us through the creative process of the track. Did you face any kind of challenges during the production stage?

Yeah sure — usually when working with vocalists I write a basic demo/vibe of the direction I think we should go with — Once the vocals come back — that's when the tune will really start to put in the work — then once that process is done we go through it together for any last changes/edits before its mixed down and sent for mastering…. from start to finish the process can take anywhere from a week to 6 months depending on the projects your working on!

Talk to us more about how your experience was like creating this track. What sort of mindset were you in when you initially started working on this song?

Peppery is super quick at the writing process and he always comes through with a decent hook/chorus — this tune was a bit unusual as the vibe totally changed once I got the vocals back for this one — think there are 2 other versions of it on the hard drive still.

What sort of message do you want your listeners to take away when it comes to your music in general?

I always want the listener to catch a vibe whenever you are listening in a club full of people or you just missed the last train and have to walk home with your headphones on. Productions are fun because you get to shapeshift into genres depending on what vibe you or a vocalist is on.

Where do you garner your musical influences from? If given an opportunity, who would you like to collaborate with in the future?

Influence can come from anything, usually when you're not expecting it! Obviously with most of the most I’ve put out, a lot of it is from early 2000’s UK sounds as those are the — early grime/garage/dubstep! I’d love to collaborate more with some singers this though and see where that goes !

Lastly, what’s next for you? Anything in the pipeline for the year 2022?

Well I think I missed the invite for Coachella this year haha — So yeah be cool to put an EP and a few singles together, maybe a few more collabs with some producers.
