Dylan Emmet

8th April 2022

Interview: Amy Bell

Editor-in-chief: Owen James Vincent

After finding out he had a two-year-old daughter he never knew about, Dylan began releasing a string of personal and self-revelatory songs documenting his journey, beginning with leaving Los Angeles to become an insta-dad in New York overnight. Currently living with his daughter back in upstate New York, Dylan has continued to successfully write and produce for multiple artists on both coasts by utilizing video chat and taking month-long trips to LA to write.

In the past year, Dylan has had his songs featured everywhere from Billboard to Spotify’s New Music Friday!

April 8th, 2022 - New York indie-pop singer/songwriter and producer Dylan Emmet returns with his new single “What’s The Point!” The song follows his past features on Spotify’s New Music Friday in Sweden, and Fresh Finds Pop playlists, as well as his recent offering “Nothing To Think About” finding itself on Apple Music’s “Relationship Goals” playlist.

Congrats on your new single ‘What’s The Point!’, launching on the 8th of April 2022, how do you plan to celebrate the launch date?

Thanks so much! I plan on being in the studio all day that Friday. I'm not going to lie, I'm pretty boring on release day. I usually clear the day as much as possible so I can post all the content, promote, and respond to people. Maybe I'll throw in some cheesecake somewhere. You never know.

You discovered that you had a 2-year-old daughter that you never knew about, what was your reaction like when you found out about that?

It was actually 5 years ago I found out about my daughter. It completely turned my world upside down. I had finally gotten settled in LA and was starting to make things happen there. At that moment, I couldn't really take in the weight of how much my life changed. All I knew was that I needed to move back to my hometown in Upstate New York, and that it was going to make my music dreams a lot harder. In reality, I was really scared. At the same time, there was no doubt in my mind that Penelope was my greatest gift. Whatever it took, I would do it for her.

This song is about something very relatable, falling in love with someone who is emotionally unavailable, what is your advice to someone who is going through the same thing?

My advice would be to look really honestly at yourself. As much as I would like to blame things on my ex, I was the one who was allowing myself to be treated that way. It's really hard, especially when you already have fallen in love with that person. You need to be honest with yourself though. Are you happy in this relationship? Do you feel safe? Are you the best version of yourself with this person? If nothing changed, would you stay happy over the long term? You need to realize you are worthy of and deserve to say yes to all of those things. If you can't and nothing is changing, it's time to love yourself first.

How is this song different from any of your other releases?

This song was definitely different. I have been obsessed with Hyperpop over the last few months. This was the first song where I really incorporated all of the inspiration I've been getting from listening to all of that. It has me so excited for my sound moving forward. Also, I usually write and produce my songs by myself. This one was a collaboration with my good friends Joey Pepe and Nick Cozine. We made the entire track in 6 hours on my last writing trip to LA. It was an absolute blast. There is nothing better than creating something really special with your friends.

When you are recording and writing a song, what is the process?

It really depends on the situation. Usually, I will start with a chord progression and maybe a basic beat or a few cool production elements. Then I'll write the actual song itself. After that, I'll produce the song for real and record the actual vocals. If I'm working with other people, we always start by talking about our lives and finding something real and cool to write about before we get into it.

What is next for you?

So many things. To start, I'm going to be releasing a new song every 6-8 weeks this year. I've also been writing/producing some tracks for other artists that I am beyond hyped to finally be out in the world. That and performing as much as possible now that things are opening up a lot more.
