Known for crafting magical and serene atmospheres with her piano-laden melodies and soaring string arrangements, Tam Alawa is currently under the spotlight for her brand new single “What I’m Made Of”.

We recently had a chat with the wonderful Tam Alawa regarding her phenomenal music journey!

Hi there Tam. Thank you for joining us on ReVamp! How are you doing amidst everything going on currently?

Hi, thanks for having me! I am doing really well. I’m so happy with the progress that has been made since my first release ‘Bring Me Back’. It’s close to 65k now and ‘What I’m Made Of’ has had some traction recently as well. It’s an exciting time for me as an artist and songwriter.

Before delving into your music journey, I’d like to ask you what it was that brought you closer to the field of music in the first place?

At the age of nine, I decided to start guitar lessons and my passion grew as a result. It gave me the tools to accompany myself on stage and start performing at venues. I decided to study music for my GCSE’s and IB. Now I am attending Goldsmiths, University of London studying Popular Music which has helped me grow further connections and opportunities.

Let’s talk about your recent single “What I’m Made Of”. Huge congratulations on the project! Where did you garner the inspiration for this track?

Thank you so much! I wanted to reflect on how there is a lot of power within self love. It was important for me to write a song about this topic and I wanted to spread this message to others who needed a reminder of how important self love and empowerment is for everyone.

Did you face any challenges while creating the project?

Yes, I actually did face some challenges. I was writing lyrics with my team and trying to figure out a top-line melody and I remember having a complete blank and it felt like I was going around in circles. Since the topic was so important to me, my first instinct was to “over complicate” the song and as a result the message became more blurred.

I remember going out for a walk with the team and coming back to the studio and then the ideas were coming through smoothly. I’m very grateful for stepping outside for a walk because that also inspired me to get into a calmer state and avoid the complication and excess pressure I was putting on myself to write the song.

Where do you garner your general major music influences from? If given an opportunity, who would you absolutely love to collaborate with in the future?

I found my major musical influences through friends and listening to new music. I would love to collaborate with Halsey in the future as I love their sound and I really look up to her as an artist.

When it comes to songwriting and the creation of music, do you prefer a specific setting to work in, or does any environment work for you in order to get your creative juices flowing?

My favorite setting to work in is a studio. I feel like I am the most productive as I can work on my preferred DAW as well as pick up any instrument and just start recording.

It’s a great place to feed off the energy of others when in a writing session and there is nothing more convenient than just jumping in the booth to record the rough vocals as a reference on good equipment. With that being said, I feel each environment offers a different perspective, idea or energy. I am open to working anywhere, as I feel like a change of scenery is important.

What are the top 3 things on your bucket list regarding the year 2022?

In 2022, I want to continue releasing more singles, go on tour and write songs for successful artists. I am grateful as I feel like these are very reachable goals as I am progressing as an artist and am in the process of signing with the publishing company Prolific Songs as an exclusive songwriter. I can’t wait to get started and I am hoping this will allow for a full time career in music!

What’s next for you, Tam? Any upcoming projects you’d like to tell your fans about?

Absolutely! First off, I am excited to be playing a set in Brighton over the Great Escape weekend. I am also looking forward to the release of new music over the next couple months as well as signing with Prolific Songs as an exclusive songwriter. I am very excited with what’s next and I look forward to sharing more news very soon!

Lastly, is there any message that you’d like to convey to your fans reading this interview?

I would like to thank my fans for their continued support! I appreciate everyone who has engaged with my music. I hope to continue connecting and relating to my fans with my upcoming singles. Thank you for having me!
