3ric

Interview: Amy Bell

What's going on!! My name is 3ric and I have a ‘3’ in my name because I don’t like capital ‘e’s.

I’ve released a few tunes with Sony and I’ve opened for the likes of Meduza, Majestic, Dimension & many more!

I’m excited to be here with ReVamp and talk about my single ‘Greater Heights’, which recently hit 400k streams on Spotify (crazy!) and the future of my music!! I hope you enjoy the interview.

For the artist 3ric in particular, the song is dedicated to his grandmother who passed away in 2017 and spread the message that no dreams are too big to achieve. So instead of going too deep into the grief, we get here a song that celebrates both life and love for each other.

Hi 3ric, Thanks so much for speaking to ReVamp, in 3 words describe your sound?

Hello, hello, hello!! 3 words - Acoustic, Chill & Dancey.

Boom!

When did you realise that you had a talent for music and wanted to pursue your talent?

Ooo I wouldn’t say talent that's very kind of you haha!! The story of how I got into producing music is very weird and underwhelming… when I was about 15 I had work experience at this huge law firm in London and I was listening to some Electro/Dance Mixes on YouTube. I was sitting there, blankly staring out of the window and just thought to myself, ‘wouldn’t it be cool to be able to make my own music’… and the rest is history haha!! Very disappointing I know!!

Do you remember the first album you ever bought?

Oh no! Ok, so I’m not 100% sure if this was my first one, but this one definitely stands out the most. Most people would be embarrassed, but I’ll embrace it… Justin Bieber's first album, ‘My World’!! Yep, I’m a big fan of the Biebs and still am today haha!!

Let’s talk about your music, how has your music changed since you first started creating music?

When I first started, it was around 2015/16, so Dance music was HUGE!! You had Martin Garrix, Chainsmokers, Avicii (RIP <3), Kygo, Zedd, David Guetta, DJ Snake all going crazy so it was a great time for music. To be honest, I was copying them, just trying to be like them!

I’ve learnt that copying someone never really goes well haha, Martin Garrix will always be the best version of Martin Garrix, so now it’s a bit different. Now, I’m not trying to be like them, I’m trying to find my own sound!! What makes ‘3ric’ unique and recognisable you know!! I’m super happy & excited to say that I’ve found something… but I’ll talk a bit more about that below ;)

You have a new single out ‘Greater Heights’, what was the inspiration behind the single?

Yes!! The song is about losing someone you love, a family member, partner, a friend etc. It takes the perspective of that person you lost and they are telling you they want the best for you, to carry on, achieve your dreams and these ‘Greater Heights’, as the song is titled!!

Was this song from a personal experience?

Yeah! I lost my nan in 2017 and she was always very precious to me. It’s hard to put in a few words, but she was caring, encouraging and always wanted the best for me! I just hope I have made her proud!

Unfortunately, loss is something everyone experiences and it can come in so many forms, so while it is based around a personal story, I hope it is relatable to everyone and people find their own comfort, their own  meaning and stories in the song :)

When you were writing the song, did a lyric stand out to you at all?

For me, it’s the chorus vocal, the big ‘I’ll always be with you’!! The person might not be with you anymore, but it’s them saying they’ll always care for you and be by your side! It's a really powerful part of the song and is definitely a stand out moment for sure!

When it comes to writing and recording the single, what was the process?

So I produced the entire instrumental first, this was probably towards the end of 2019!! I started with the guitars, got the arrangement in place and sent it over to Michael. He came up with the vocal melodies and then it was just about finalising the lyrics!!

There are so many weird sounds in the song!! I wanted to make it so everytime you listen, you hear a new sound! Just as an example, there's a Lion's Roar, a Camera FX thing, Glass crashing and even stranger sounds I don't even know how to describe haha… but it all adds to the character of the record!! If you listen to the song, as a challenge, see how many you can pick out!!

If you could tell your 16-year-old self anything, what would you say?

Oooo! Great question! I watch a lot of those motivational videos so I should be good at this haha… one of my favourites:

“Aim for the stars, so even if you land on the moon you're still out of this world!”

But I would also say, try to understand ‘perspective’!! If you can understand perspectives and point of views, everything makes a lot more sense. You can see things before they happen, actions start to add up and it can give you much more scope on situations!!

I’m sure everyone is excited to know what is next for you?

Oh yes!! I’m extremely excited about this!!! I mentioned earlier I’ve been taking some time to really find something unique and find that ‘3ric’ sound!

I’ve combined two of my favourite genres in a way that hasn’t ever been done before and the results are insaneeeeee!! I really can’t wait to share it with everyone!

I don't want to give too much away because things are still being worked out and I have a few releases coming before this new sound, but what I will say is it doesn’t just put me in a box!! It allows me to explore new styles and combinations, while still remaining true to Dance music and this new sound of mine!!

I never want to be arrogant or obnoxious, but I really do believe this is special! Stay tuned <3
